Mergers and Changes:

Transatlantic Council moved its headquarters at the Mannheim Military Community in Heidelberg, Germany to Livorno, Italy.

Otetiana (Ty-Ohni 95) and Finger Lakes (Ganeodiyo 417) councils voted to merge. Thanks to Bro. Andrew Kosmowski for reporting this.

A new name has been chosen for the Otetiana-Finger Lakes merger: Seneca Waterways Council. A closed doors youth meeting of its two lodges was held at Camp Cutler to work on lodge merger details. The final Ty-Ohni Lodge event will be the annual banquet in January, 2010.

A name has been chosen for Seneca Waterways' new lodge: Tschipey Achtu, which is the Native American word for "ghost deer" pertaining to the rare white deer that live around Seneca Lake. The possible numbers that had been considered by the 2009 Lodge Merger Committee were 18, 0 [how would that work?], 918, 8, 69, 333.

Tschipey Achtu's lodge chief has said "that the youth originally voted on the number 0, but [that their] advisor [said] national would not recognize that as a legitimate number. The only number they would recognize is 397." However, an official from Seneca Waterways stated that "the Lodge did pick a number [397] but it was in conflict [with Chilantakoba] and rejected by National.*".

*If this actually means that National does still recognize lodge numbers-- at least enough to prevent a conflict with another lodge-- then this is huge. If National were to allow this, then surely council-based numbers would start to supersede existing lodge numbers. If that happens, I'm afraid that lodge numbers would become obsolete and a very significant part of local lodge histories would be diminished.

However, John Pannell in his OAImages.com blog, 1/30/2012 writes "I was talking with a Roger Ward... he tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges."

This version of the story better explains why choosing zero as their lodge's number was rejected. Even though I have yet to see their use of lodge number as 95, I am still hopeful. So far, there are only two other lodges, Pocumtuc and Nataepu Shohpe, who are currently not using a lodge number-- and Nataepu is a brand new lodge.

Hiawatha Seaway Council absorbs Cayuga County Council.
After Cayuga County Council voted against a proposed merger with Hiawatha Seaway Council, National refused to renew the council's charter. The merger was being pushed because the council has too few units, which have now all been assigned to HSC. Without a valid charter, Tahgajute 247 has merged into Kayanernh-Kowa Lodge #219.

According to the July 8th 2009 issue of the The Citizen (Auburn, NY) "Cayuga County Council board President Don Beardsley said there is a 'legal question' regarding the council and that a band of people are working on establishing their own council, but he would not comment further because of 'legal implications.'"

Earlier in November, it was announced that Hiawatha Seaway Council would be changing the name of their recently combined council. On 12/30/09 it was posted on the NY OA Trader blog that both Steve Austin and Dick Krzyiewski reported that the council voted to change its name to Longhouse Council. The other name that they could've chosen was Adirondack Foothills Council.

Kayanernh-Kowa 219 and Tahgajute 247 merged to form Lowanne Nimat Lodge of the Hiawatha Seaway Council.

Actually, since Tahgajute went defunct when Cayuga County lost its charter on July 1st, 2009, it might be more accurate to say that it was absorbed into Kayanernh-Kowa, which then decided to change its name to reflect the new change. However, Firm Bound In Brotherhood, The history of the Lowanne Nimat Lodge not only states that Tahgajute 247 attend the NE-3B (sic) Conclave held Aug 14-16, but confirms that the two lodges "officially merged on January 1, 2010 after two successful meetings at Camp Woodland."

Lowanne Nimat Lodge has officially chosen a lodge number: #219, which is the lowest of its predecessor lodges, Kayanernh-Kowa.
So far, only two OA lodges do not have a lodge number, and only one, Pocumtuc Lodge, has stated they won't choose one.

Shortly before 3/13/2010, Longhouse Council updated its website to reflect its new name. Further developments included:
"The Hiawatha Seaway Council has submitted and received back the documents allowing us to go by the new council name, Longhouse Council [#373]. The name change will be made legally final at the June annual meeting."
Effective: The official name change didn't legally occur until June of that year.

Keystone Area (Susquehannock 11) & York-Adams Area (Tuckahoe 386) councils have voted to merge. The vote for consolidation on February 24th came after eight months of review and planning. The newly-formed council will be known as the "Keystone York-Adams Council #544" until a new permanent name is selected.
Effective: April 1, 2010.

Dave clarified that Sasquesahanough will indeed host this year's NE-6B Conclave. As for Susquehannock still hosting after its merger: "Right after the merger that is what our LEC was saying. It turns out that in practice the conclave staff will be made up with roughly even numbers from both former lodges."

David Hultberg announced that the Keystone York-Adams Council has picked a permanent name for the new council: "New Birth of Freedom," which reflects the history of south central Pennsylvania, especially the Gettysburg Address.

David Hultberg announced Nov 16th on Arrow-L the name of their new lodge: Sasquesahanough Lodge #11, Home of the Phoenix. Sasquesahanough being the 1612 spelling of Susquehanna.

"The lodge name was voted on at the Wizard Safari [10/2/10]. The lodge number was voted on at the Consolidated Lodge Meeting at the conclusion of the Susquehannock Lodge Fellowship. The 'Phoenix' is a strong and vibrant totem. The symbolism of being reborn is also appropriate to the consolidation."

Greater Pittsburgh (Enda Lechauhanne 57) and Penn's Woods (Nachamawat 275) Councils announced that they will merge to form the new Laurel Highlands Council, effective on July 1, 2011.

Allohak Menewi Lodge #57 is created from the merger of Enda Lechauhanne 57 and Nachamawat 275.
Effective: Officer elections were conducted at their MountainFest Council Camporee, Sep 16-18, 2011.

I personally find it very unique-- and disturbing-- to have a newly consolidated council that is non-contiguous. My fear was that the council that sandwiched between the two, Westmoreland-Fayette, won't be pressured to merge simply because of this. Especially when you consider that its lodge, Wagion Lodge #6, is one of the oldest lodges in the country. However, as of 2023 it is happily still intact.

Western Massachusetts Council moved from Chicopee to Westfield, MA.
