After we got Cottontail and realized he was not a Yorkshire terrier I was a bit sad. The reason we didn't realize is because I had never had a Yorkie as a puppy. Caesar was given to us. Still, Cottontail was an almost perfect mistake. In the one-year we had him he had grown much bigger than a furbaby I could hold in my arms. No less love to him, I started hinting to my husband that I missed having a small baby in my arms and would like a Yorkie for Christmas.
On Dec 13th-- I get the years confused now, being almost 60 does that-- my husband told me he was going out Christmas shopping. Being the suspicious Southern gal that I am I got a little peeved that he had to go Christmas shopping with my best friend and wasn't paying attention the whole year like a good husband would do. Well he comes home and rushes in saying sit on the couch sit on the couch hurry, hurry sit on the couch someone is here to see you. I said, "I don't have my robe," he said it doesn't matter. So I sit.
He says close your eyes, spread your hands. I'm thinking Great, he got me a stuffed bunny (we collect stuffed bunnies). He said open your eyes, AND I SAW THIS LITTLE TINY ITTY BITTY YORKSHIRE TERRIER, and all I could do was rock back and forth crying my eyes out saying, it's a baby, it's a baby... oh my God, it's a baby.
I must have cried for 20 minutes. She's the very best Christmas gift Dale has ever given me. To hell with diamonds and gold and silver. They say diamonds are forever. LOVE is forever!
So we named her Sparkles for her sparkly eyes. Sparkles Megath Crawford is her official given name! Megath being a combination of Megan & Garath.
Sparkles is a sweet little girl who loves to love and be loved. She has a bit of a problem not knowing her size. We have a Rottweiler on one side of us, and a Husky on the other and she charges the fence as if she is a well fed St. Bernard! It's awfully funny to watch. She looks very vicious, in her own mind!
She is always near me in the lounge chair and loves for her long hair to be stroked. An interesting fact about Yorkshire Terriers. they do not have fur, so they do not shed. They have actual hair just like humans and it needs to be washed and combed on a regular basis depending on the season.
Sparkles learned to do tricks when she was young. She can do flips, give you her little paw and sneezes on command. But the MOST IMPORTANT thing Sparkles does is to give LOVE!!! --Patty
