French Creek s16

Langundowi Lodge #46 was founded in 1972 and is chartered to the French Creek Council in Erie, PA. Langundowi Lodge was formed when Eriez Lodge #46 merged with Hoh-Squa-Sa-Gah-Da Lodge #251 and Skanondo Inyan Lodge #256.

The lodge totem is based upon the legend of the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy. It describes how a tall pine tree was taken out of the ground in the Onondaga village while the chiefs of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca tribes threw all of their weapons into the hole. The tree was then replaced and became known as the Peace Tree, which was said to have the Five Nations as its roots and an eagle perched in its upper branches watching for anyone who would disturb the peace.

1973-76
The FIRST issue was a fully embroidered flap that had a dark blue solid background and a white rolled-edge border. The Great Tree of Peace totem was centered, with a light blue creek running diagonally behind it. The words "LANGUNDOWI LODGE" were stitched in yellow across the top, with a large "46" in yellow on the right side. "wWw" (monogram style) was stitched in large red letters on the left side and two red arrows along the bottom pointing away from the base of the totem. Was restricted to three-per-life: two at Ordeal, and one at Brotherhood.

1976-77
The SECOND issue was not fully embroidered, and had a light blue twill background with purple mountains capped in white. A major change was made in the totem design, in which the pine tree was stitched in white, and the eagle and creek were larger and more detailed. "LANGUNDOWI" was stitched in yellow across the top, with "wWw" in small red letters on the left, and "46" in yellow letters on the left side.

1978-80
The THIRD issue was not fully embroidered, and had a purple rolled-edge border and a light blue twill left background. The totem was more closely patterned after the original Iroquois Tree of Peace design, with a larger green pine tree, smaller stylized eagle, and no creek. A yellow fleur-de-lis was added in upper right corner.

1979-80
Identified by The Blue Book as a different issue, this patch is essentially the same as the THIRD issue, but has a no-twill background.

In 1979, a special fully embroidered patch was issued to honor the 50th Anniversary of Lodge #46. It had the same design as the THIRD issue, except that all yellow was stitched with gold metallic thread, and had a large gold "50" in the upper left corner. Only 400 were issued.

The FOURTH issue has the same design as the THIRD issue, only that it is fully embroidered and has a plastic back. Was restricted to one per lodge event and with dues payment (4/year). There were two varieties. The s3a had a purple border, while the s3b, which was more common, had a dark purple border-- although the difference in border color, which you can see, is very slight. This flap was issued for over eleven years before the s4 first appeared in the Spring of 1993.

conclave ghost, 2002
Issued at the January 2002 Winter Conclave, the ghost flap in forest green was the first new lodge issue in over twenty years. Proceeds from the sale of the this issue were utilized to offset costs for the hosting of the 2002 Section NE-3A Conclave at Custaloga Town SR. Attendees of the Winter Conclave were allowed to purchase up to 5 flaps. Only 1,000 were distributed.

2008-2009
In 2008, the lodge switched patch manufacturers. This new design, the SEVENTH issue, moved the FDL to the left side of the flap. The lodge number, 46, was moved to be in line with the word LANGUNDOWI and took the place of the FDL. The blue stitching in the sky is vertical as opposed to previous and subsequent versions where the stitching is horizontal. The borders are a lighter purple than the s3 and s4 and the yellow is significantly lighter in color than the s3 and s4. This is the first of three flaps in this new style. The flap uses a lighter color brown thread and the grass is an olive green color. At almost an half-inch wider, these flaps measure 128x58mm (MVE on size) and have the Stadri manufacturing plastic backing. Like their predecessors, flaps were restricted to active dues-paying members, who were able to purchase one per lodge event and when paying dues (5/year).

2009-2011
In 2009, the lodge switched patch manufacturers again, and transitioned to Moritz Embroidery Works. While the patch design is the same as the s9, these flaps were significantly smaller, measuring 115x52mm. The borders are a lighter shade of purple than the s3, s4, and s9s and the yellow is significantly lighter in color than the s3 and s4. They had clear plastic backs with Moritz Embroidery Works stickers.

2011-Present
This issue is the current Langundowi Lodge flap. Identical in design to the SEVENTH issue, the s11 has two key differences that distinguish it from the s10. The first difference is that it's much larger than the s10, and similar in size to the s9 Stadri Flap. The s11 is approximately 126x60mm (MVE)-- there is also a 128x60 size variation. The backing of the flap is also different from the s10. The s11 issue has the BSA licensing seal and Moritz Embroidery plastic back design. Current flaps are restricted to active dues-paying members, who may purchase one per lodge event and when paying dues (5/year).

2012-13
Released in the fall of 2012, the EIGHTH issue is a tribute to the Lodge's 40th anniversary. The flap features a larger "Iroquois Tree of Peace" design similar to the "Friendship" patches of the late 80's and early 90's (see x4a and x4b). Sales were limited to 5/event per member for the first few Lodge events; the restriction was then lifted in the Spring of 2013 after sufficient time had passed to allow all brothers the opportunity to buy a flap. Profits from the sale of the flaps support the Campership Fund, and also help subsidize the cost of hosting the 2015 Section NE-4A Conclave that was held at Custaloga Town Scout Reservation. 1,000 were issued.

NOT LODGE ISSUES. Though the Blue Book lists these as Lodge issues (s7, x7 and s8, x8) these two flap sets were created by Ho-Nan-Ne-Ho-Ont Lodge to commemorate the two lodge contingents' trip to the 2002 NOAC at Indiana University. The playful design depicts a "merger" that incorporates unique elements from each lodge's flap design and totems.
